I always emphasize on the importance of building a good quality backlinks for your site. In general this links will help you in:
- Getting exposed to the right audience. If you have a fishing website, will it be relevant to have it linked from a dating site? Of course it’s not..
- Increasing your rank and indexing your page in search engine. In order to achieve this you must make sure search engine robots are able to find you via your backlinks while crawling the net. But it’ll be sad to know if the robots are not allowed to find you simply because having a nofollow in the link (e.g.: <a href=”http://yoursite.com” rel=”nofollow”>)
- Getting your page indexed by search engine robots as soon as possible. No point having hundreds of pages but none are indexed. Therefore nobody could find you from search engine. Though apparently your page will get indexed but the sooner it is the sooner you get noticed and people come to your site. So placing your backlinks in a popular sites will give much help to achieve this. Normally this can easily be done by having your backlinks placed in a high PR pages. In fact by doing this it will helps your page gets higher PR too. I’ve seen some pages which have good PR but having only few backlinks from other high PR pages.

So that is sure to bring you some traffic too!
good job
( if you’re quick you’ll see the evidence of my feedgit widget)
ps. why don’t you try to see if you can take over the groups I started on blogcatlog (ask admin) I can’t administer them now, if you can’t just start a thread saying I passed control to you and then just admin anyway.
Meanwhile see my post on which sites get you more traffic, you’ll find they are the smaller ones not these blogger forum giants. Get yourself a feedgit widget and you’ll see that for yourself!
